Project 1: Mobile Application Proposal
Requirement
"Students are required to create a proposal documentation for
their mobile application project. You are required to redesign an
existing app that you find unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience
or interface design and its subject to preliminary approval by the
module coordinator. Students need to do surveys, interviews, market
studies and research on the selected topic. The document should also
include key features of their mobile application and provide clear flowchart
of the app. The document will determine whether the mobile
application idea is good to continue to the next development phase. This task is
an iterative process whereby during the assignment period, students
are free to get feedback from their peers and module coordinator to
further refine their idea."
The proposal needs to include:
1. Introduction
- Purpose: Revamp existing mobile app to elevate user experience and
interface quality.
- Stress the pivotal role of mobile app design in shaping user
contentment.
2. Background and Context
- Evaluate current app's design and functionalities.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses.
- Competitive analysis.
- Gain insights into user demographics and requirements.
3. Goals and Objectives
- Establish clear objectives for the redesign initiative.
- Prioritize addressing current deficiencies and enhancing user
satisfaction.
- Define primary and secondary goals to align with user
expectations.
- Developing your design strategy.
4. User Research
- Detail methodologies for conducting user research.
- Describe the methods you will utilize to collect user feedback and gain insights.
- Devise a robust plan for user testing and validation.
5. References
- Curate pertinent articles, books, and design samples for inspiration
Progression
First, I downloaded various apps from the Google Play Store. This was
the first time I wished the Google Play Store had a filter to sort apps
from the worst rating to the best, but in reality, I had to look through
each one. For this project, I signed up for numerous apps to explore
their content. In the end, I selected three apps that I believe have
room for improvement: MBO Cinemas, KTMB Mobile, and Padini.
Next, we needed to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of these three
selected apps and propose solutions. However, I felt very rushed in
completing this task.
Fig. 2.1 is my progress slide, and in week 2, Mr. Zeon provided
feedback. I need to include the target audience and reviews regarding
UI/UX for each app, and he approved MBO Cinemas as the app for my final
proposal.

Then I started preparing the proposal, which includes six sections:
Introduction, Background & Context, Goals & Objectives, User
Research, and References. At first, I was really confused and didn't know
how to analyse the apps. Luckily, I had an example from a senior, which
was very helpful. It showed me what content to include and provided a good
reference.
In week 4, we had to present. I was very nervous because I know my
presentation skills need improvement, but it was a good opportunity to
try. On the day, Mr. Zeon said I could add solutions and design strategies
to my proposal. He also told me to explain more about the primary goals
"improve usability" and "Navigation Improvement". He mentioned that the
secondary goals "Increase Engagement" and "enhance visual design" were too
similar.

Final Proposal Slide
Based on the feedback, I made some revisions. I refined the
explanations in the primary goals and replaced "Improve Usability"
with "Ticket Access" because I felt that "Improve Usability" was too
broad. The app also had issues with ticket access, and if users
can't get a QR code ticket, the cinema booking app loses its purpose.
Furthermore, I changed "Increase Engagement" to "Enhance Consistency"
because the current app layout is quite disorganised. Having
consistent colours, font styles, and layouts can enhance the user
experience. Finally, I added a design strategy, which helped me
clarify what needed to be redesigned.

FEEDBACK
Week 2:
- Adding target audience.
- Add reviews regarding UI/UX feedback.
- You can choose the first one (MBO Cinemas) as the final proposal.
Week 3:
- The slide doesn't have any major issue.
- Weaknesses need solutions.
- The primary goals "improve usability" and "Navigation Improvement" need more explanation, similar to the detailed points under Feature Enhancement.
- The secondary goal "Increase Engagement" is challenging to achieve. How can it be accomplished? Additionally, it overlaps with "Enhance visual design."
- Adding design strategy.
REFLECTION
Additionally, I'm very grateful to Mr. Zeon for providing us with senior
project examples for reference. Without those examples, I would have been
even more confused, not knowing what to do.
