Project 3: Digital Triptych

To begin, we will choose a story from the website https://poestories.com/stories.php. Once we have selected a story, we will break down its narrative into a 3-act structure comprising an Introduction, Climax, and Epilogue. Lastly, we will create a digital triptych featuring three panels, each illustrating one of the acts. For this project, I have chosen "The Balloon Hoax" by Edgar Allan Poe as the story.

Story Summary ("The Balloon Hoax")

Introduction:
The story begins with a fictional news report stating that a massive balloon named "The Victoria" took off from England and successfully crossed the Atlantic, eventually landing in Norfolk, Maryland, United States. The report generates wide attention and interest.

Climax:
The climax of the story showcases the balloon's takeoff and the adventurers' daring journey in the air. They may encounter storms, a treacherous flight path, and other perils, but ultimately they successfully cross the Atlantic and land at their destination.

Epilogue:
The story concludes with the shocking revelation that the entire balloon voyage was an elaborate hoax. The truth behind the fantastical news report is exposed, leaving the public in disbelief.

Research
First, I explored what a digital triptych is on Pinterest. I find it challenging to convey the entire story using only three images, especially without knowing the summary of the story.

Based on my research, I have developed a basic design idea. Fig. 1.3 demonstrates how to draw clouds, which is a very helpful instructional resource since I am not skilled at drawing clouds. It can be understood that each cloud can be composed of countless circular shapes.

Sketches

The first image depicts a person's surprised reaction upon reading the newspaper. The second image shows the content of the newspaper, featuring a balloon that can fly across the Atlantic. The third image reveals that the news is false, with both the first and third images displaying identical newspaper details.

In the original story, there is a significant portion dedicated to describing the structure of the balloon. Therefore, I have combined the information from the story with research materials found online to create a sketch of the balloon (refer to Fig. 2.1).

Digitalization

I took the finished sketches and imported them into Adobe Illustrator to use the Image Trace feature to convert them into three colors. After receiving feedback in week 12, I made adjustments to the first image by replacing the originally expressive characters with simple silhouettes and enlarging the newspaper. I imported the revised sketches into Adobe Illustrator and used the Image Trace feature to convert them into line art, making it easier to make adjustments to the lines later on.

Act 1

First, I searched online and found a world map to put inside the newspaper. I marked the starting and ending points of the balloon flight on it. Since the handwritten title in the original sketch was already quite messy, I replaced it with typed text to make the title clearer. I wanted the newspaper to have a realistic texture, so I used a clipping mask to overlay a newspaper texture image I found online onto the newspaper. However, the resulting effect was not very prominent.

The process of drawing the hat is relatively simple. I used rectangles and ellipses as the foundation, and then added some decorative lines to complete it.

Because I felt that the character looked a bit too plain, I added a white collar to it.

For the balloons in the newspaper, I didn't go into detail with the drawing. I simply sketched their rough shapes. The detailed drawing of the balloons will be done in Act 2. Finally, I added a green gradient background, and Act 1 is complete!

Act 2

Act 2 showcases the balloons flying amidst the clouds, with a sea and some islands below. However, since this is a fictional story, I want to interpret it with more dreamlike tones, and it will have a slightly different style compared to Act 1 and Act 3.

The process of drawing clouds was the most enjoyable part for me. I used the color palette from the bottom right corner of Fig. 4.1 to depict dreamlike clouds. I started by laying down a darker shade as the base color and basic shape, and then gradually added lighter shades to depict the details. Here, I drew clouds for two versions to represent the layers of clouds in front and behind the balloons.

I used the photo on the website as a reference for the balloon (refer to Fig. 4.3). I find drawing the balloon to be the most challenging part because the reference image is not very clear, especially with the numerous and tangled ropes on the balloon. Therefore, I simplified the ropes.

Fig. 4.3 Balloon reference , week 13 (30/6/2023)

"The balloon (an ellipsoid as represented in our engraving of the model) is composed of silk, varnished with the liquid gum caoutchouc." This sentence is taken from "The Balloon Hoax" original text. This news is fake, and there has never been such a balloon in history, so I can only rely on a black and white image to try my best to understand its structure, which is a difficult task for me. Since the reference image is black and white and blurry, I can only create its colors myself. Here, I used purple and blue to make the balloon more dreamlike.

Fig. 4.4 Balloon drawing process, week 13 (30/6/2023)

In "The Balloon Hoax" story, it is mentioned that there is a light wooden frame beneath the center of the balloon, which is attached to the balloon itself using a customary network. Hanging from this frame is a wicker basket or car. For the balloon basket, I have depicted it in orange color. As I plan to scale down the size of the balloon later, I have not included any passengers in the basket.

While the ropes of the balloon in the story are described as being interwoven in a network-like structure, replicating it exactly would make the balloon appear overly complex. Therefore, I have chosen to simplify the number and complexity of the ropes.

After completing all the elements of Act 2, I combined them together, but I struggled with the placement of the balloon and clouds, making several changes. As for the island, I enlarged it to make it more noticeable.

Act 3

In Act 3, the map and balloon on the newspaper are created using the balloon from Act 1. I struggled with bending the images to fit the newspaper but the results turned out decent. The Image Trace feature was extremely helpful as it saved me from having to redraw everything, although some of the lines still appeared messy, so I needed to tidy them up. The hand holding the feather pen is actually a photo of my own hand that I took and then traced, as I'm not skilled at drawing hands, and my own hand can be posed in any way I want. I used the width tool to create variations in line thickness for the strokes made with the feather pen, and added gradient colors.

Finally, I added color and newspaper texture to the newspaper (although it may be difficult to notice). For the background, I used a deep blue gradient to evoke a sense of mystery and calmness, as it is all part of a hoax.

FEEDBACK

Week 12: The first image does not need to depict facial expressions; only a silhouette is required, with the hat jumping to indicate surprise. The emphasis can be placed on the upper half of the newspaper, and there is no need to include as many elements. The second image can have a more dream-like feel with pastel colors. The third image should have the same color scheme as the first image.

REFLECTION

I think this project is the most challenging one I've done so far. I wasn't interested in almost any of the available stories, but I had to choose one. Trying to showcase the entire story with just three images was extremely difficult, and I don't believe anyone can understand my digital triptych without reading the story summary. I felt lost at the beginning, I didn't know how to depict the before and after of the story. The Image Trace feature helped me save a lot of time by converting sketches, but I feel like I didn't manage my time well, and I ended up rushing to complete it at the last moment, which resulted in some details not being well-executed.
