Project 2: Illustration Poster

"For Project 2, you are to submit your work in Maybank Foundation MyTIGER Values Art Competition 2023. Based on your chosen topic, submit an illustration poster that interprets your project aim through Maybank TIGER core values of Teamwork, Integrity, Growth, Excellence & Efficiency, and Relationship Building."

We need to choose one of the 12 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as our poster theme, and I have chosen 'Clean Water and Sanitation'.

Fig. 1.0 Research, week 4 (9/5/2023)

I did some research on Pinterest and sketched out rough drafts for two ideas. Both ideas start with a tap. The first idea represents water as a precious and life-giving entity, similar to a newborn baby. The second idea shows water flowing from the tap, creating a river with different scenes on each riverbank.

I ultimately chose my second idea. I found a reference photo of a tap and began drawing, loosely sketching the shape and the colour of the river and the riverbanks, as shown in Fig. 1.2.

I realised that the tap I had previously drawn, based on a real reference, looked out of place and didn't fit well with the overall composition. I felt it needed a flatter design. As a result, I found another reference image and redrew the tap accordingly.

I have depicted a vibrant scene with diverse trees on the right bank of the clean river. These trees vary in appearance, shape, and color to avoid a monotonous composition. I found the process of drawing each tree enjoyable, as I could freely create unique shapes without adhering to any specific tree species. During this process, I came to appreciate the usefulness of the Curvature Pen tool!

Next, I copied and pasted the drawn trees onto the right bank. However, I felt that the initial arrangement was a bit crowded, so I deleted some trees and adjusted their sizes to create more space. I also added a total of five red houses (one of them hidden in the farthest forest).

To depict the contaminated water source on the left bank, I decided to add some small decorations, including a skull, fishbone, and splashing water to create a more impactful and engaging composition. Meanwhile, the left bank remains barren with no signs of life.

After finalizing most of the elements, I designed three different layouts, shown in Fig. 1.6, and I still prefer the first layout

For the title, I chose the Bodoni Std (Bold Condensed) font and replaced the dot of the letter 'i' in 'Life' with a droplet shape to echo the poster's theme. The subtitle is lighter and smaller in size compared to the main title. Finally, I adjusted the colors of the left bank, separating the source of the river into clean water flowing from the tap and polluted water flowing from behind the mountains (refer to week 9 feedback). And thus, it is complete!

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Add golden and yellow stars to increase contrast. The letters in "sea turtle" are too widely spaced; they can be brought closer together.

Week 9: Since the tap depicts both dirty and clean rivers flowing out, it doesn't effectively convey the message. It is recommended to have only clean rivers flowing out from the tap, while the dirty rivers emerge from behind the mountains.

REFLECTIONS

I find poster design to be quite unique because it not only requires visually appealing and captivating illustrations but also involves conveying information through visuals and text. I'm quite satisfied with the poster I designed. Sometimes, even though I have ideas in my head, bringing them to life can be challenging. I particularly enjoyed the process of drawing trees, creating various tree shapes was truly fascinating. I discovered that the Curvature Tool is incredibly convenient and easier to use than the Pen Tool. It greatly helped me achieve clean and precise lines.
